Excel INT function

INT examples

Every result below was calculated from this sample sheet by the same spreadsheet engine the Cellwise app uses.

ABC
1EmployeeHoursAge (years)
2Jordan37.7529.6
3Mei41.2534.2
4Carlos22.551.9
  1. =INT(B2)

    Result: 37

    The whole hours Jordan worked, with the partial hour dropped.

  2. =(B2-INT(B2))*60

    Result: 45

    Subtract the whole part to get the leftover fraction, then convert it to minutes.

  3. =INT(C4)

    Result: 51

    Age in completed years. 51.9 is still 51.

  4. =INT(-2.3)

    Result: -3

    For negatives INT rounds down to the lower number, so -2.3 becomes -3.

How to use INT

  1. Click an empty cell.
  2. Type =INT(
  3. Select the cell or type the number.

Common INT mistakes

Expecting -2.3 to give -2

INT always goes down, so it returns -3. Use TRUNC or ROUNDDOWN(x,0) to cut toward zero.

Using INT to round to the nearest

INT(4.9) is 4, not 5. Use ROUND(x,0) for nearest-number rounding.

Splitting date and time wrong

A date-time is a number, so INT returns just the date part. Format the result as a date, not a number.

INT FAQ

What does INT do in Excel?

It rounds a number down to the nearest integer. INT(8.9) is 8 and INT(-8.9) is -9.

What is the difference between INT and TRUNC in Excel?

For positive numbers they match. For negatives, TRUNC just removes the decimals (-8) while INT rounds down (-9).

How do I get just the decimal part of a number?

Subtract INT from the number: =A1-INT(A1). For positive numbers you can also use =MOD(A1,1).
